Quality & Environmental Management Systems - ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 Common Ground
ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 are internationally recognised standards that focus on two variations of management systems, quality and environmental respectively. Due to their shared focus on effective management practices, there are many common elements.
Here are a few examples:
- Key Principles
Sharing the same principles, such as Leadership Commitment, Process Approach and Continuous Improvement.
- Documentation
Sharing some common documents, for example Competence Matrix & Training Records that can be integrated (Quality & Environmental Management System requirements combined) to prevent unnecessary duplication.
- Control Measures
Sharing some common control measures, for example Internal Audits and Management Reviews that can also be combined to meet both standards' requirements, to avoid duplicated activities.
ISO 9001 certification can provide a solid foundation and valuable experience that can make it easier to achieve ISO 14001, due to the similarities in the management systems and overlapping requirements, however, additional environmental focus is still necessary to address some specific environmental expectations of the standard.
So, if you have already achieved ISO 9001 certification and are considering ISO 14001, you are likely to be meeting many of the requirements and be part way through the journey. Alternatively, if management systems are new to you and you are interested in both Quality and the Environment, an integrated management system can be introduced, to achieve both ISO 9001 and 14001 certification requirements at the same time.
