DISPELLING SOME MYTHS
Common Perceptions of QMS & ISO 9001 Implementation

  1. It is overly complex, lengthy & involves time-consuming administration.

Implementing a QMS does take some time and effort, however, it does not have to be excessive if well planned and follows a clear and effective process. Similarly, the creation and administration of the QMS does not have to be particularly complicated. Tools and techniques are encouraged to promote best practice. They can be quite simple but very beneficial and improve efficiency. Although the standard provides a framework for effective QMS, the specific requirements and implementation approach can vary based on factors such as the operation, industry, size, complexity and regulatory context.

The standard is designed to be flexible and allows organisations to interpret the requirements in a manner that aligns with their specific business circumstances. Provided the key requirements are incorporated, the rest can be flexed and scaled appropriately.  Although, while adapting the standard to the unique context of the business, the core principles should be adopted to ensure an effective QMS is established and maintained.

Tallentire Consultancy has helped many companies implement an ISO 9001 QMS in just only four months (which is quick!).  It is always a remarkable team effort.  At Tallentire Consultancy we strive to simplify the implementation process and make it as effective as possible, however, having strong business foundations and an enthusiastic, engaged team helps to achieve certification in record time.  Potentially taking only four months from the team overview, to success, with a UKAS certified ISO 9001 Quality Management System.

  2. It is too expensive.

An ISO 9001 QMS approach can be introduced at minimal cost with just the time and effort of your team. You can reap many of the rewards without the need for certification. Alternatively, if this is the aspiration, there is an external certification cost that depends on the size and complexity of the business, however, it is not necessarily too costly.  UKAS Certification Body fees can vary quite considerably, so it is worth requesting quotes from various companies.

The benefits of a QMS will often outweigh the investment e.g. reduced issues and costs (waste and rework), increased efficiency and productivity, also an improved customer journey that enhances customer satisfaction.  This will also maximise the effectiveness of any marketing campaigns that are purposely designed to attract new clients, who will ideally be retained and may help build a strong brand reputation through positive word-of mouth.

ISO 9001 Certification may also possibly open doors to new markets such as large customers and qualification for tenders (where the standard may be a requirement).
