Workplace Well-being

Workplace Well-being's Image

Workplace well-being is a topic that continues to gain attention, with growing recognition of the importance of creating a healthy and supportive work environment for employees. The ILO (International Labour Organisation) defines Workplace Well-being as:

“Workplace Well-being relates to all aspects of working life, from the quality and safety of the physical environment, to how workers feel about their work, their working environment, the climate at work and work organisation... Worker’s well-being is a key factor in determining an organisation's long-term effectiveness. Many studies show a direct link between productivity levels and the general health & well-being of the workforce.”

It’s encouraging how the Work Environment is also identified as a key resource consideration for successful businesses as part of the International Quality Management System (QMS) Standard ISO 9001. Amongst other points, it emphasises the importance of having an environment and conditions that support the health and well-being of people at work. Highlighting social, psychological and physical needs of individuals.

There is research from the University of Warwick that found happiness made people around 12% more productive, so it is a worthwhile investment from a people and business perspective. A happy team is a productive team!

Broadening the well-being and performance research, a study by the British Academy of Sound Therapy (BAST) found that 89% of participants considered music an essential component for their health & well-being, aiding relaxation, happiness and concentration. The research showed 13 minutes of music was the optimum time for those using music to concentrate:

81% Felt their mind became clear
91% Felt they could do their job better
89% Were able to make decisions clearly

Ending on a fun note, Catherine Price explains in her book 'The Power of Fun', how fun isn’t a distraction from our problems, it’s a solution! Whereas stress dampens creativity, true fun and rest is an investment in creativity. When people are engaged and inspired, dopamine surges, serving as a reward for the brain creating a sense of euphoria, which plays a pivotal role in our motivation.

Compelling reasons for investing in your team’s experience at work?
