The Power of Recording Nonconformances for Business Success
During an ISO 9001 & 14001 Surveillance Audit at a manufacturer last week, I was pleased to hear a response to one of the auditor’s questions. It was aimed at a member of the admin team responsible for maintaining a record of issues, complaints and positive feedback. The auditor asked:
“What are the benefits of recording nonconformances?”
The team member shared a compelling example:
“Recently, our Managing Director was questioning areas of stock loss. Thanks to the tracking and trend analysis of nonconformances we were able to provide some insight.”
The auditor was impressed as it demonstrated an appreciation of the value of capturing actionable data that was leading to informed decision making and tighter controls.
This example highlights one of the many benefits of logging nonconformances. Exploring the root cause of issues and identifying trends which can lead to process improvements and enhancements to product/service quality.
