Do you have a business book recommendation?

At the start of this year, I mentioned how ‘The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It’ by Michael E. Gerber had significantly influenced Tallentire Consultancy over the past few years. Instantly seeing the connection with a Quality Management System (QMS) approach.

A new book I'm excited to dive into is The Happy Index by James Timpson, CEO of the family-owned Timpson business, founded in 1865 by his great-great-grandfather William Timpson. Now, with over 2,000 locations across the UK and drawing on valuable business experience over decades, this Sunday Times bestseller promises valuable management tools and leadership advice for cultivating a happier, healthier workforce. I’m eager to discover the lessons of upside-down management and the insights it offers!

In the first hour of listening to the audiobook, you are introduced to eight lessons focused on getting the people and culture right and Leading with Kindness. It touched on best practices from Timpson and other organisations such as Asda (where I previously worked at Asda House in Leeds - which I was proud to hear and brought back fond memories). I'm intrigued and motivated to continue listening, seeing a connection to a QMS and personally valuing the importance of kindness in everyone’s life. I also love the quote/recommendation from Jake Humphrey, host of the High-Performance Podcast:

“The way he operates is the way I would like the whole world to operate.”

The Happy Index resonates with my corporate experience at Asda and Walmart, where people, customers and culture were at the heart of the operation. Similarly, resonating with my passion for QMS. Reflected when covering Clause 7 – Support, of the ISO 9001 QMS standard in our digital training course: A SIMPLE GUIDE TO QMS & ISO 9001. We emphasise that to get the best results, you need the right people, infrastructure and environment. Including the importance of resources, competence, awareness, communication and documented information - key requirements of the standard.

I look forward to hearing more from James Timpson and gaining valuable insights.
