Quality Management Systems & The Founder

Quality Management Systems & The Founder 's Image

Building on The E-myth blog, this book celebrates the business franchise format. A model that has been adopted by many large organisations, where the franchiser has a proven system that works, provided you follow the system.

In The E-Myth, Michael E. Gerber explains how to think about growing a business as if planning to franchise it (similar to McDonald’s), with consistent repeatable processes to deliver a consistent quality customer experience.

Have you seen The Founder with Michael Keaton? If not, there shouldn’t be too many spoilers. In summary, in 1954 Ray Kroc walked into an American burger restaurant. He was blown away by their burgers, low prices and effective operation, with the genius ‘Speedee’ system! The first ever food system to deliver fast service. It was revolutionary at the time, where average waiting times at McDonald’s were only 30 seconds.

Ray quickly saw the value in the Speedee system, as the system meant it was a business that could be replicated and sold as a franchise model. A model of a proven system that works, provided you follow the system!

Although the McDonald brothers Richard and Maurice had made some attempts to franchise, Ray unleased the franchising potential that resulted in the rapid growth and current day success. Standardisation, clear roles and responsibilities and a disciplined approach were the order of the day. That’s a Quality Management System (QMS) approach to me!

Do you have franchise format experience you’re happy to share?

Over the past few years, we are fortunate to have worked with McDonald’s on various projects, so we have seen this in action and the benefit to colleagues and business success, globally.
