ISO 9001 QMS: Mastering Management Reviews
This week I am facilitating a combined ISO 9001 (Quality) & 14001 (Environmental) Management Review meeting for two manufacturing companies in the UK. I particularly enjoy being involved in this type of activity, as I witness evidence of how management systems are positively influencing organisations, in addition to encouraging discussions around business improvements.
In a nutshell, a Management Review is a tool that forms part of the management system monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation process. The purpose is to ensure the continued suitability and effectiveness of the management system. It serves as a helpful mechanism for reconvening as a leadership team, reviewing and continuously improving the management system.
While there is a risk that the Management Review may be perceived as bureaucratic, resulting in resistance or a lack of enthusiasm, it can be delivered in a manner that creates an engaging and positive experience. A worthwhile activity to celebrate success and drive businesses forward, as well as also reminding the leadership team of the management system framework, supporting documentation and value to the business.
Here are some tips for a successful Management Review:
- Management Reviews should be held a minimum of once per year.
- Conduct reviews after the Internal Audit(s) & prior to external certification audits (if applicable).
- Review all QMS documents, including the Quality Policy.
- Celebrate success to reinforce best practice!
- Remember to document & retain Management Review meeting minutes.
