Embracing Change and Overcoming Resistance: Neuroscience Insight
Neuroscience provides helpful insight into understanding why we instinctively resist change. This resistance is part of our evolution to limit uncertainty and risk. Our brains are wired to prefer stability and predictability, which historically helped us survive in an unpredictable world.
However, in contrast, change and learning something new can be incredibly motivating. As we make progress, we experience a sense of fulfilment and joy that can drive us forward. This dual nature of our response to change - resistance versus motivation - creates an interesting dynamic that we can learn to navigate.
One key insight is that when considering change, appreciating an outline of what is involved, including specific steps can be immensely helpful in overcoming resistance. When we are faced with change, having a clear roadmap can reduce fear and negative expectations around success. This structured approach not only alleviates anxiety but also empowers us to move forward with confidence.
In our experience, working with businesses on implementing ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems (QMS), we have seen first-hand how breaking down complex processes into manageable steps can transform resistance into proactive engagement. Whether it's through an outline of what is involved/project plans, training programs, or one-to-one coaching, providing clarity and support is crucial.
For those of you navigating change in your organisations, we encourage you to:
Communicate The Vision
Clearly articulate the benefits and goals of the change.
Break It Down
Outline specific, actionable steps to achieve the desired outcome.
Provide Support
Offer resources, training, and coaching to help your team feel equipped and confident.
Celebrate Progress
Recognise and celebrate small wins along the way to maintain motivation and morale.
Change is inevitable, but with the right approach, it can also be a source of growth and satisfaction.
